Help Arizona Broadway Theatre
“Close the Curtain on Cancer”

(Peoria, AZ) Monday, July 05, 2010
Arizona Broadway Theatre is joining the fight against cancer with a “Close the Curtain on Cancer” campaign in memory of courageous individuals who lost the fight against the disease and in honor of those who remain strong and deeply hopeful of complete remission.

A portion of the single ticket sales of the July 16 evening performance of ABT’s current production of Footloose, along with collected outside donations, will be divided between Arizona Assistance in Health Care, Inc. (headquartered in Goodyear) and Hospice of the Valley (based in Phoenix). Donations will be made in memory of Jeff Johnson, who succumbed to cancer on July 16, 2008. Jeff was the husband of Melinda Johnson, one of ABT’s patron services associates. “I really wanted to do this event, because my family and I personally understand the hardship that this disease brings. To be brutally honest, it really stinks,” commented Johnson. “My kids and I wanted to give back to other families going through what we did, and ABT was kind enough to want to help out, too.”

ABT Children’s Play Offered at Glendale Library

Peoria, AZ -- Arizona Broadway Theatre (ABT) will take its current Theatre for Young Audiences’ production of Jack and the Beanstalk on the road for one performance at the Glendale Public Library Auditorium on Monday, June 28, at 2 p.m.  The show is open to the public and free of charge, however, seating is limited.

This is the not-for-profit theatre’s first collaboration with a Maricopa County Library District venue to promote an awareness of and appreciation for the performing arts by children.

“Arizona Broadway Theatre is delighted to provide this opportunity for local youngsters as part of our community outreach initiative,” said Kiel Klaphake, ABT executive producer and co-founder. “While we are committed to educating people of all ages about theatrical expression, ABT is particularly focused on children’s enrichment through the magic of live theatre.  And other than school, what could be a more natural way to reach them than through a library?”

Klaphake noted the partnership between the theatre and the library is the result of a grant award to ABT from the City of Glendale Arts Commission’s Performing Arts Program, which is the sponsor of Jack and the Beanstalk.

He said the theatre hopes to have expanded partnerships with more local libraries to foster early literacy and the performing arts in the future. Libraries and potential funders interested in learning more about partnerships should call the theatre’s Director of Development Pamela Grady Karwan at 623-776-8400, ext. 119.

ABT recently announced its Theatre for Young Audiences’ 2010 – 2011 season featuring five new productions, including Hansel and Gretel, Christmas in the Land of Oz, Cinderella! Cinderella!, The Velveteen Rabbit and the world premiere of The Adventures of Rose Red, Snow White’s Less Famous Sister.

The soundtrack to Footloose, the popular 1984 movie, scored three Top Ten songs and held the Number One album position on the Billboard Pop Album chart for two months.

Footloose (the movie) was near and dear to my heart at the time of its release,” stated Joseph Martinez, the musical’s director. “I grew up in a small town in central Utah, and the movie was filmed just about an hour away, and I remember the excitement surrounding the filming of the movie,” he continued. “Then, when the soundtrack came out, you couldn’t turn on the radio without hearing one of the songs, and that’s what I love about this show. The music is still as good today as it was back then.”

Phantom Haunts Arizona Broadway Theatre
Beginning April 23

Arizona Broadway Theatre’s Fifth Season continues on April 23, 2010, with Maury Yeston and Arthur Kopit’s Phantom, a haunting story based on Gaston Leroux’s immortal tale of a desperate young man born and raised in the catacombs under the Paris Opera House.

“If you say the word ‘Phantom,’ most people think immediately of the Andrew Lloyd Webber hit,” stated director Mace Archer. “But there is a different Phantom. In this work, the Phantom has a name and is much more human than in the Lloyd Webber piece.” With a book by Arthur Kopit and music and lyrics by Maury Yeston (the Tony Award-winning duo of Nine), this Phantom has been a regional theatre hit over the past 17 years.

About the Cast
ABT’s Executive Producer and Co-Founder Kiel Klaphake returns to the ABT stage to star as Erik (“The Phantom”). Last season, Kiel appeared as Frank Butler in Annie Get Your Gun. For two years, Kiel performed the role of Raoul in the original Hal Prince production of The Phantom of the Opera in Hamburg, Germany. Stateside credits include Show Boat, La Bohème, The Merry Widow and The Yeoman of the Guard, among others. Also at ABT he has been the musical conductor for Brigadoon and stage director of Cabaret and Gypsy.

Recent performances include Margaret in The Light in the Piazza at Phoenix Theatre and Peggy in The Taffetas at ABT, where she also appeared as Fiona in Brigadoon, Sarah in Guys and Dolls and Marian in The Music Man. Other credits include: Philia (Funny Thing...Forum), Evelyn Nesbit (Ragtime), Miss Dorothy Brown (Thoroughly Modern Millie) and Mabel (Pirates of Penzance).

James Rio, ABT’s Artistic Administrator, makes his way back to ABT’s stage as Gerard Carriere after appearing as John Utterson in Jekyll & Hyde (ariZoni Award nomination). Credits include André and Lefèvre in The Phantom of the Opera (Hal Prince/Andrew Lloyd Webber) in Hamburg, Germany, and regional performances of She Loves Me (Georg), Man of La Mancha (Cervantes), Into the Woods (Baker) and Guys and Dolls (Benny Southstreet, Arvide Abernathy).

Making their ABT debuts are Dion Johnson and Brian Sweis, neither of whom is a stranger to the Valley’s theatre audiences. Dion will portray Inspector Ledoux and the Minister of Culture. His most recent credits include the docudrama After Armageddon for the History Channel, Middle Scrooge in A Christmas Carol for Actors Theatre and as Strange Man in A Vampire Tale for Scorpius Dance Theatre in Phoenix and New Orleans as part of The Vampire Film Festival.
